My name is Joia, and I’m a Kansas City based graphic designer and
illustrator driven by a single goal: to make things as bold and unapologetic
as possible. My design philosophy is rooted in the belief that powerful
visuals can challenge and inspire. I create work that demands attention and
leaves a lasting impression. If you’re ready to stand out from the crowd, let’s
create something remarkable together!

This project is advertising for a fictional event that includes a poster, stickers, and a small booklet about the event.
For this project, I rebranded my earlier “Chit Chat Café” menu into Mew Brew, a fictional cat café that combines playfulness with a more polished, café-like identity. I simplified the menu structure for clarity, created a muted but cozy color palette (latte beige, blush pink, sage, and charcoal), and paired Pauline Bold with Montserrat for a balance of whimsy and readability. The biggest design shift was developing Purrl, a cat mascot whose head serves as an icon across the menu and whose full body appears in posters, loyalty cards, and stickers. I tested the system with a promotional poster for the “Catnap Roast” blend, which showed how illustration, typography, and branding could come together in advertising. Overall, this project taught me how to refine playful illustration into a cohesive system that feels professional, flexible, and fun.
Creating my own personal branding was so much fun for me! It let me actually think about myself for once and what I like for a change! As you can see, this is what inspired my entire design of my portfolio!
This project was for a free annual campus event that featured two jazz groups to promote Kansas City's rich jazz history. I took a lot of inspiration from vintage looking items as well as researching a lot about what sort of jazz posters looked like in older times. This took me a bit to figure out just how I wanted to design it but I think in the long run, I love how it turned out!
This project was to make an infographic poster about voting around the time we were voting on who would be our president of the USA. I chose to center my topic around propaganda and list out a least four types of the many ones you can encounter in your everyday life. Originally just one deliverable, I decided to rework this piece into a series of posters.
This project was one of the first ones that let me explore and wrap my mind around what spreads are and how to effectively make a book layout for something. I enjoyed making this type specimen because I've never seen anyone else make one for this font specifically and I had a lot of fun exploring different grids and columns!
This project helped me explore creating a very unique, decorative font to use as the main headliner for this piece. I had lots of fun letting my creativity loose and especially with my color choices.
Please get in touch with me directly for questions regarding my work, commissions, or project proposals! I look forward to connecting with you! Thank you for choosing me as your illustrator/graphic designer!
